Biblical Nicea

Available as a full day experience.

Visiting Nicea, modern İznik, is witnessing the birthplace of Christianity as we know it today.

It was the site of the First Ecumenical Council held under Constantine the Great where the core beliefs of Christianity were defined and helped it to emerge into a cohesive religion.

Besides the Hagia Sophia, where the council took place, you will visit ruins of the Church of Koimesis (Dormition) once pilgrimage site, along with remnants of Roman and Byzantine walls, gates, ruins and impressive Ottoman monuments.

The Ottoman İznik has additional cultural significance as the center where famous quartz tiles that adron Ottoman palaces and mosquest were produced. You can visit workshops and see demonstrations of local artists.
