Istanbul

City Walls and Neighborhoods

Available as a full-day experience; can also be compacted into a half-day.

The Walls of Constantinople rank among the most impressive city walls in the world. Istanbul was born on the peninsula between the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus, because it was easy to fortify the narrow land flanked by the waters. Using mixed modes of transportation —suburban train, walking, private vehicle and public ferry—the tour encircles the 13-mile-long walls which were virtually impenetrable for a thousand years. You will explore the Fortress of Seven Towers, walk around and atop the walls and their surrounding moat, discover the webby dungeons. You will peek into friendly, non-touristy neighborhoods of the Old Town, visit the Chora Mosque (formerly the Chora Church), a gem of late Byzantine architecture known for its exquisite mosaics and frescoes illustrating the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The nearby Tekfur Palace is a rare surviving example of secular Byzantine architecture. Meandering in and out of the Golden Horn Walls, discover the trendy Balat neighborhood -once the Jewish quarter- and the oldest synagogue in the city. The tour concludes by visiting the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, the Orthodox counterpart to the Vatican.
